On space; the adverse effects of technological advancement; taking time out to simply 'be'
The Adiveda Weekly #7
Hari Aum Sadhakas!
We hope you've been enjoying reading about the elements. Today we'll take up ‘akasha,’ the fifth and last element in our series on the Pancha Mahabhutas.
The Hindu way of life
Akasha or space or ether is the subtlest of all the elements but it has the greatest impact not only on our lives but on the whole world. This is because it penetrates every other bit of matter or life that we can think of. Everything exists in ‘akasha’ or space. Without ‘akasha’ everything in the world including our own bodies will simply collapse.
Akasha is born along with the universe and expands and contracts and finally dissolves with the dissolution of the universe. It is the first element to come into being at the creation of the universe and the last to leave at its dissolution. So it is basic to all life even though we may not comprehend it.
Reflection of the week
“We are responsible for polluting this most important element by introducing extraneous vibrations such as aeroplanes and satellites. In the recent past, in order to bring 5G into force, one hundred thousand radiation satellites have been projected into the ether. We have never had such a thing before. The freedom of communication that we have today is at the cost of our mental and physical health.”
For your everyday practice
Take time out to watch the sun set, meditate and simply ‘be.’
The mind is liberated when its bondage with the visible world of objects, events and thoughts come to an end. Then only can it enter the realm of pure awareness, free from the memory of the past and uncertainties of the future. This can happen only through yoga and meditation.

The five elements that go to make up our cosmos are akasha, vayu, agni, apas and prithvi (ether, air, fire, water and earth), in order of increasing grossness. Of these, akasha is the most mysterious and intangible yet the most powerful since in it, is contained all the other four! It is the fundamental element. In our weekly newsletter we started from ‘prithvi’ or the earth element which is the grossest, because it is the easiest for us to see and understand. In today’s feature, Mataji explains how and why akasha is the most important of all the five elements.
Important dates this week
