Q - What is Maya (illusion)?
A - In Sanatana Dharma, illusion (Maya) is the cosmic force that veils the true nature of reality, making the transient world appear as permanent and the unreal as real. It causes the soul (Atman) to identify with the body and mind, forgetting its divine essence. Maya is the reason we perceive duality, though in truth, all is one, Brahman. Liberation comes through piercing this illusion with true knowledge (Jnana).

The Mundak Upanishad states that by knowing Brahman - the eternal, formless reality underlying all creation, one gains the essence of all knowledge, as everything arises from and exists within that one supreme truth.
Reflection of the Week
The limited mind becomes frustrated because it operates on false expectations, seeking permanence in a world that is inherently impermanent. It clings to outcomes, possessions, and identities shaped by illusion (Maya), forgetting its true nature. When reality doesn’t match its imagined desires, dissatisfaction arises. Only by aligning with truth and letting go of attachment can the mind find lasting peace.
